The Six-Plus-Two Ambulatory Care Model: A Necessity In Today’s Internal Medicine Residency Program

Sumedh Hoskote, Bijal Mehta, Ethan D Fried

Abstract

Internal medicine residencies have traditionally focused on the in-patient setting for training residents and ambulatory care has always played second fiddle. Even in terms of resident preference, ambulatory care, with a predominant primary care focus, often finds fewer takers compared to more fellowship-oriented in-patient blocks. However, competency in primary care that can only be achieved by participating in long-term longitudinal care of a set of patients is integral to the internal medicine residency experience and to producing a well-rounded physician.
